MONTHLY SATURDAY WORKSHOP: Headstand

IMG_4904.jpg

Enliven the whole body from the crown of the head in this amazing pose, often called the “King of Asanas.” In this workshop, you will safely strengthen and prepare the body, especially the shoulder girdle and neck, for salamba sirsasana (supported headstand). Overcome fear of pressing your head into the floor and feel how this action elongates the neck by exploring it in different relations to gravity, including standing up and lying down. Learn proper alignment of the neck and shoulder girdle and the actions needed to support this in full headstand. Strengthen the muscles needed to sustain a the pose so you can connect to the powerful energy that surges through the spine when you engage the crown of the head into the floor. Expect a strong and clarifying practice, followed by neck release before a deep savasana.

ONLINE. You will receive a zoom link and prop list one hour before class.

May be suitable for back issues if you know how to accommodate them in an existing practice (please contact me if you are interested and have a back issue).

Yoga for Postural Strength

dowel tadasana maine.jpg

Poor posture often contributes to back pain, tension, and discomfort. This may be temporarily alleviated by therapies such as acupuncture or massage, but only returns without the development and maintenance of sound posture. In this workshop, you will learn what to look for in your standing and seated alignment and develop both visual and sensory awareness that will help you consciously find a strong and easeful stance. We will then work on strengthening what is needed to maintain this alignment in daily life and help prevent pain and discomfort. Expect an exploratory physical practice that includes exercises for the core (all three sides!) and the entire back body, plus opens the front and side chest so you are left feeling expansive and tall. Come and be proactive about your health!

Lower Back & Hip Release Workshop

DSC02216+%281%29.jpg

If you have spent too much time in isolation, working hours of zoom calls, watching Netflix, or otherwise feeling cramped up, this workshop will bring you welcome relief. Strain, stiffness, and fatigue are all common problems that arise in the lower back, sacrum, and hips from excessive sitting. Relieve stress in these areas by gently mobilizing and aligning the joints, stretching with the breath, and anchoring the mind in the body to improve clarity and focus. Invigorate the lower body with blood, warmth, and nourishing energy as you strengthen it to provide a more powerful and lively foundation for all your activities. Expect a gentle, movement-based yoga practice with clear instruction and demonstration that ends with restorative poses for a deep release at all levels of your being.

All levels.
This workshop does require that you are ambulatory and not in acute pain.
It is addressed to generalized lower back and hip stiffness and stress resulting from a more sedentary lifestyle. If you have specific back or hip issues such as labral tears, hip replacement, disc issues including herniations or bulges, scoliosis, spinal fusions, spondylolisthesis, or others, please contact Kaitlyn
here before signing up to see if this workshop is safe for you.

MONTHLY SATURDAY WORKSHOP: The Roots of the Heart: Backbends for a Strong and Supple Spine

The Roots of the Heart:
Backbends for a Strong and Supple Spine

Expand the energy of the heart from a stable and functional foundation in the lower body that preserves the integrity of the spine. Learn to thread the core from the legs to the pelvic floor through the spine and to the heart. Develop range of motion along the front line of the body and ready yourself for more supple backbends. Gain strength, coordination, and courage as you stabilize the nervous system and conquer fear of moving into unseen territory.

Backbends are important to practice because they allow us to physically explore shapes we don’t make in daily life. They also represent how we can expand our sense of self into unknown space and challenge fear with courage.

Expect a full asana practice that begins with a short meditation, mudra, and simple chant about the contents of the spiritual heart. We will close with a luxurious back release and savasana.

SUNDAY MEDITATION SERIES: An Inquiry into the Source of Our Separation

  • Google Calendar ICS

Where is the line between what is outside and what is inside? Where does it come from?

Come and rest with these and more questions that take you to the heart of what constructs your reality. From a relaxed and meditative state, this deep and progressive Buddhist inquiry leads you to deconstruct your understanding of who you are and what separates you from others. Explore the line between what is outside of you and what is inside you, where that line comes from and how you can expand it. This wonderful practice prepares us to connect more fully and repair our relationships with others and with the world.

When we sit as a group, it offers a powerful container for the practice of meditation, often making it easier to drop into a calm state. This expansive state allows for sharper focus and can even yield unexpected insight.

Be part of this special sangha every Sunday in February after the Scoliosis and Fusions class. If you attend class, you will benefit from having just completed a full practice that prepares your mind to settle. We often sit up from savasana feeling ready for meditation!

You are also encouraged to join just for meditation when the class is over if you cannot make class or do not have scoliosis or a fusion. This meditation is open to everyone!

Sundays, 12:15-12:35p EST
February 7, 14, 21, 28

Contact me here to register. You can join even if you missed the first class.

Free and by donation.

Spring Sound Bath

IMG_0116.jpg

with Kaitlyn Hipple and Mar Orozco

Rest. Release. Resonate.

Experience the restorative and healing power of the gong. In a deep state of physical and mental repose, these special harmonies invite you to rise to another level of awareness where resolution and healing can occur.

This timeless space of prayer is full of magnificent vibrations that have the power to alter the conditioned mind of the ego, make visible solutions to unsolvable problems, dissipate physical, mental, and emotional tension, and help eliminate patterns that cause dis-ease. One often emerges from a profound experience that words cannot fully describe.

Gongs have existed for thousands of years, and have been used for a variety of purposes, including the healing of physical, mental, and emotional ailments. Their vibrations can cause subtle shifts inside the listener, which allow for a freer energy flow and this in turn allows natural healing to occur. As is known to multiple traditions, the world is composed by vibrations and these instruments provide some of the most powerful harmonics known to man. Mar and Kaitlyn will bring their personal collection of these ancient instruments in order to create a powerful sound scape where you will experience a wide variety of tones.

Come vibrate with the voice of the gong, accompanied by bowls, chimes, bells and other inspired sounds.

Eye Before I: Eyeing Without and Eyeing Within

K. Hipple Garudasana.jpg

Part I: The Eyes in Asana - February 17
Part 2: The Eyes in Pranayama - March 3

Sundays, 3:30-5:30

Each part may be taken independently.

Part 1: The Eyes in Asana

We often let the eyes grasp, over-direct, and “run the show” on auto-pilot. Instead, cultivate greater awareness of the eyes and promote clearer, non-habitual ways of seeing. Learn exercises that release tension around the eyes and purify sight. Enhance your asanas by maximizing the usefulness of the eyes, especially for balancing, while also using the asanas to sharpen your sight. Expanding the act of seeing, open eyes elsewhere in the body to awaken its amazing intelligence. Finish by thanking and resting the eyes, directing the senses inwards to calm the nervous system and the mind.

Part 2: The Eyes in Pranayama

Increase the visibility of your life force, or prana. Learn breathing techniques that help you harness and direct this force to enhance longevity and and self-awareness. Use the breath, an ever-present and often under-acknowledged tool, as an inner eye. Explore yourself within to balance the I of the ego, or ahamkara—the “I-maker.” See surrender as “doing” without the ego, or eyeing without the I. Take a break from making the self by eyeing the Self that is already made, waiting to be seen for what it is.
